Yarl Geek Challenge Junior-Season-10 finale marks a decade long journey to nourish technological innovations among school children
As it was mentioned in the previous article(read the article here in case if you missed it), that the zonal level evaluations for YGC Junior 10 happened on 26th of June 2021. 31 teams were selected to compete in finale which was held on 10th and 11th of July 2021.
The judging panel for the final level evaluation was comprised of 7 eminent judges who represent diverse science and technology professional spheres. The judging panel for the finale consisted of Prof. Roshan Ragel, Dr. Murugadas Thanihaichelvan, Dr. Shanmuganthan Thananjeyan, Mr. Sriskandarajah Shriparen, Mr. Sivapathasundram Tharmaseelan , Mr. Emilianuspillai Amirthanathan Gnanaseelan and Mr. Arulsodhy Thusyanthan.
The students pitched their ideas under Web, Mobile, Hardware, Innovation, and Application of Science categories and the winners for each category were selected at the finale. Additionally, to appreciate some solid work done by some of the teams judging panel also included special mentions.
All the teams which competed in the finale did their best in their own ways. They all handled the challenging situation exceptionally well. Some had the trouble to access proper internet connection, others had the trouble to buy necessary technical things to shape their ideas, some were not supposed to meet their team members due to the travel restriction implied for the past month. But as the famous story goes, Sir Isaac Newton himself formulated his theories during the plague pandemic, similarly each student has built their ideas despite the challenges.
Best Mobile Application Winners: Dudley Dharmikan, Shobana Dudley and Dudley Shathosikan from Vavuniya Tamil Maha Vidhyalayam.
They built an app that helps pre-school children to make their selves familiar with Tamil alphabets, the words and their pronunciations.
Best Application of Science Winners: Sivanesan Shinoajhan and Mohan Arjun from Hartley College.
They made a vacuum cleaner with things which are easily available at home. The vacuum cleaner presented is made of a plastic bottle, electric motor and battery. Their idea was to recycle plastic bottle and to make a vacuum cleaner by their own instead of buying one.
Best Innovation Winner: Rajasekaran Kanindran from St.Patricks College.
He created a low-cost Jeep model. He added that he got this idea to produce low-cost Jeeps locally as a replacement for high-cost imported Jeeps.
Best Hardware Winner: Anurakhanthan Vishvakhanthan, Aravindan Venukan and Sutharan Arudkumaran from Hartley College
They created a smart glass. Like smart watches, they wanted to add a display to the spectacles which can be directly connected to the mobile and can display mobile notifications just in front of eyes.
Best Web Application Winners: Nimalan Kurushangar , Sriharan Abisan and Cubert Collins Romeshion from St. John College.
They created a website to connect software companies to software engineers. With a special focus on remote job opportunities to software engineers. The pandemic is the reason which made them to think and host a website to list remote job opportunities.
Following Teams are the Special mentions
1. Praveenan Parameswaran and Seyavan Yathavan from Jaffna College for creating a mobile app for Inservice teaching advisers (ISAs) to maintain and store information about their visits to schools.
2. Uthayan Kisaanth and Suvarnika Uthayan from Jaffna college implemented an automated hand sanitizing equipment to avoid contact when using hand sanitizers.
3. Janarththanan Sajeevan, Nanthakumaran Kirujan and Sathiyanarayanan Aksheiyan from Jaffna Hindu College for creating DIY Bluetooth RC control car and DIY Arduino line follower car.
4. Thirukeswaran Umaibala from Kokkuvil Hindu college for the school management system he created to manage schools documentations.
The results of the Zonal competition which happened a couple of weeks back were also released along with the Finale results.
Jaffna Zone Winner: Arulanantham Tharanikan from Jaffna Hindu College for his creation of security system created with Arduino and Ultrasonic sensor.
Valikamam Zone Winner: Sivakumar Saathveegan from Jaffna College for creating a model of high-tech room for covid patients. Where he made opening the door, switching the lights and fans automatic which reduces the contact.
Vadamarachchi Zone Winner: Camilus Kavinvalan from Jaffna Hartley College for creating an aggregator website to bridge farmers and consumers.
Vavuniya Zone Winners: Lenin Arivalakan Mathurshan and Lenin Arivalakan Maathulan for their creation of Rader which protect the gardens from monkeys and other animals. The Rader would sense the motion of animals and can give an alarm to the gardener.
Mannar Zone Winner:Mohamed Muheeth Shukri Ahamed from Mannar Sithyvinayakar Hindu College for his tourists guiding website.
